Choosing a degree is one of the biggest decisions you'll make, and life sciences opens more doors than most people realize: research, diagnostics, biotech, conservation, food science, and more. Here's a real look at the degree programs open to you and where to study each one, so you can walk into your KUCCPS application with a clear sense of what you're choosing and why.

Entry requirements change every academic year and vary by intake (KUCCPS government-sponsored vs. self-sponsored). Always confirm the current minimum grades, cluster subjects, and cut-off points directly on the university's official admissions page or the KUCCPS portal before applying. Grades shown here are the most recently found and are indicative only.
Biochemistry (and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology)
The chemistry of living systems, structure and metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, amino acids and nucleotides; enzymology; molecular biology; and applications in health, diagnostics, drug development and pollution control. Programmes typically include a 3-month industrial attachment and a final-year research project.
In plain terms
Think of your body as a tiny chemical factory, biochemistry is figuring out exactly what's happening inside every cell: how food becomes energy, how medicines actually work, why some foods spoil. If you liked chemistry and biology in high school and always wanted to know "but why does that happen," this is that answer.

Microbiology (and Microbiology & Biotechnology; Medical Microbiology)
Structure, genetics and technology of micro-organisms, microbiological techniques, microbial genetics, bacteriology, mycology, virology, industrial/food/environmental microbiology, and quality assurance/control in microbiology labs. Includes attachment and research project.
In plain terms
This is the study of living things too small to see with your eyes: bacteria, viruses, fungi. You'll learn how germs actually make you sick, how vaccines and antibiotics fight back, and how those same tiny organisms are put to work making things like yoghurt, cheese, and biofuel.

Biotechnology (incl. Industrial Biotechnology)
Manipulation of biological systems for products and processes, biomolecules, genetics, molecular biology, cell and tissue culture, bioinformatics, gene technology, bioreactors and bioprocessing. Includes attachment and project.
In plain terms
This is using living things, cells, bacteria, plants, as tiny tools to make useful products, like insulin for diabetics or drought-resistant maize. If the idea of "hacking" biology to solve real problems sounds exciting, this is the degree built for that.

General Biology / Botany / Zoology / Applied Biology
Living organisms from molecules to ecosystems, general/invertebrate zoology, animal ecology, physiology, parasitology, immunology, plant physiology, taxonomy, plant biochemistry, plant ecology, population genetics, biostatistics and lab/field techniques.
In plain terms
The broadest life-science degree there is, plants, animals, ecosystems, how living things work and interact with each other. A solid choice if you love biology in general but aren't ready to pick one narrow specialty yet, it keeps most other life-science doors open for later.

Molecular Biology / Genetics / Cellular Biology (standalone)
The molecular and cellular basis of life, DNA/gene technology, molecular genetics, cell biology, and applications in biomedicine, biotechnology and forensics (DNA profiling).
In plain terms
This zooms all the way into DNA, the instruction manual inside every living cell. You'll learn how traits get passed from parents to children, how genetic diseases happen, and how scientists can now edit genes directly, the same science behind DNA testing and GMO crops.

Indicative entry: KU: Alt A Biology B-, Chemistry B-, Physics/Maths C+.
If genetics is what draws you in specifically, don't worry about finding a degree with that exact name, it's taught in real depth inside Biochemistry, Biology, and Biotechnology programs, so any of those gets you there.
Environmental Conservation & Natural Resource Management
Interdisciplinary management, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, ecology, resource inventories, environmental impact assessment, dryland/rangeland management, and environmental policy.
In plain terms
This is about protecting Kenya's forests, water, and land while still letting people use those resources responsibly, think of it as training to manage nature sustainably, for a government agency, a conservancy, or an NGO.

Wildlife Management & Conservation
Wildlife biology, ecology and behaviour; conservation strategies for endangered species and habitats; wildlife monitoring/inventory techniques; wildlife policy, law and enterprise/tourism.
In plain terms
If a nature documentary about lions or elephants has ever pulled you in, this degree trains you to actually study and protect animals like that for real, for jobs at places like the Kenya Wildlife Service or a private conservancy.

Indicative entry: UoN: KCSE C+ with C (plain) in Biology/Biological Science and one of Maths/Chemistry/Physics/Geography.
Food Science & Technology (and Food Science & Nutrition)
The science of food, food chemistry and microbiology, processing and preservation, product development, food safety/quality assurance and nutrition.
In plain terms
This is the science behind everything on a supermarket shelf: how food is made safe, kept fresh longer, and turned from a raw ingredient like milk or wheat into a packaged product, plus checking it's genuinely safe to eat before it reaches you.

Agricultural Biotechnology (standalone)
Application of biotechnology to agriculture, plant and animal genetics, tissue culture and micropropagation, genetic transformation, molecular markers, biosafety and crop/livestock improvement.
In plain terms
Using biology and genetics to make farming better, crops that survive drought or resist pests, healthier livestock breeds. Especially relevant here, since agriculture matters this much to Kenya's economy and food supply.

Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences / Marine Biology: University of Eldoret (BSc Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences); University of Nairobi and Pwani University (aquatic/marine sciences). A dedicated "Marine Biology" title is rare in Kenya; it's usually taught as Fisheries/Aquatic Sciences. Forestry & Agroforestry, Wood Science: University of Eldoret; Egerton University. Genomic Sciences: JKUAT.
In plain terms
A few more specific paths worth knowing about: studying fish and ocean/lake life (Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences, what most people mean by "marine biology"), managing forests and trees (Forestry & Agroforestry), or reading an organism's complete genetic code (Genomic Sciences).
