Design and run laboratory or field research in health, agriculture, environment, or industry; collect and analyse data; publish findings.

Requirements: BSc for assistant/technician roles; MSc/PhD for scientist or principal-investigator roles.

Licensing: None required for general research. Human/clinical research requires institutional ethics and NACOSTI approval at the project level, not individual licensing.

Test raw materials and finished products against specifications; run microbiological and chemical assays; maintain GMP/ISO documentation.

Requirements: BSc in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food Science, Chemistry, or Biotechnology.

Licensing: No individual licence for the analyst; the employer's facility is regulated (PPB for pharma; KEBS standards; the lab may be ISO-accredited via KENAS).

Prepare and manage product registration dossiers, licences, and compliance submissions to regulators.

Requirements: BSc in a life science, often plus experience; pharma roles may prefer a pharmacy/biomedical background.

Licensing: None specific to the officer; interacts with PPB, KEBS, KEPHIS, PCPB, and the NBA.

Develop and improve food products; manage processing, safety (HACCP), quality, and shelf-life.

Requirements: BSc Food Science & Technology (or Food Science & Nutrition).

Licensing: No individual practising licence; works within KEBS and Public Health food-safety frameworks. Professional membership is optional.

Assess environmental impacts, manage natural resources, run conservation and restoration programmes, and monitor biodiversity.

Requirements: BSc in Environmental Science/Conservation, Natural Resource Management, Wildlife, or Biology; MSc for senior roles.

Licensing: No individual licence to work as an environmental scientist generally, but to sign statutory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports, one must be a NEMA-registered EIA/EA Expert.

Analyse biological and chemical evidence, DNA/serology, toxicology, drug and trace analysis, and give expert court testimony.

Requirements: Government Chemist recruitment lists a BSc in Chemistry, Food Science & Technology, Forensic Science, Biochemistry, or Environmental Science as eligible, with an MSc for senior roles. The DCI National Forensic Laboratory deploys graduates in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Physics, and related sciences.

Licensing: No separate professional licence; analysts are gazetted/appointed and trained in-house. Court-designated "analysts" are appointed by the Interior Cabinet Secretary.

Represent a pharmaceutical company's products to healthcare providers and pharmacies.

Requirements: A life-science or health-related degree is commonly preferred.

Licensing: A genuine licensing requirement, governed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, Cap 244, Laws of Kenya. Applications are made via the PPB's online portal.

Tutorial fellow, graduate assistant, or lecturer track at a university; or a TSC-registered high school science teacher.

Requirements: MSc/PhD for university posts; BEd or PGDE for secondary teaching.

Licensing: Secondary-school teaching requires TSC (Teachers Service Commission) registration.

Translate science for the public and policymakers; manage programmes, advocacy, and biosafety/biotech outreach.

Requirements: Life-science degree plus strong writing/communication skills.

Licensing: None.

Plant-breeding support, seed testing and certification, agronomy/technical sales, crop-protection R&D, biopesticide production, and lab QC of seeds and agrochemicals.

Requirements: BSc Biotechnology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Botany/Plant Science, Microbiology, or Biology.

Licensing: No individual licence; seed merchants and products are registered/regulated by KEPHIS and PCPB, and GMO work is regulated by the NBA.
